Sunday Inspirational Moment with Mike

Sunday is my rest day, so there is no workout to talk about for today. I love Sundays for that reason. Really, I cannot imagine working out seven days a week. For those of you who do it — you are amazing. I don’t know if it is physical or mental, but it seems to me that my body almost requires one day off from working out each week.

I told you guys that Hoss did awesome yesterday in his belt test. His Taekwondo skills are almost secondary to what the program he is in is doing for his discipline and attitude. He is a great kid anyways, but his instructor really seems to be putting his polish on Hoss. I don’t talk about him much on this blog just because. But you gotta check out this picture my lady friend took…

Sunday Inspirational Moment

Most of you have your long workouts scheduled for today. With the Super Bowl starting in a couple of hours, you have probably already gotten out the door to train. If you haven’t yet because of weather or just laziness, let me kick you in the butt.

There are a lot of great athletes in the world of running, but few have reached the mythical level like Steve Prefontaine. I think “Pre” as his fans call him, is one of the most inspirational runners to have ascended to the top of the U.S. distance running world. He had a personality that would fill a room. He was arrogant, cocky, and extremely aggressive during a race. Personally, I like that about him. He was a one man sound bite machine.

One of my favorite quotes that ever proceeded out of his mouth was, “To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift.” He is absolutely right. There is no reason for us to skip workouts or to not meet the goals that we set for each sessions. If we have a tempo or recovery run on the schedule, there is no reason why we shouldn’t accomplish those things that we set out to do. The same goes for the pool and on a bike.

So choose not to sacrifice your gift today. Regardless of where you finish your next race, you are almost obligated to give YOUR best. Don’t skip you next workout because it is cold or your have things to do. Make time for yourself and your health and get it done. No excuses.
